GETTING HELP

Breaking the cycle of crystal meth use is not easy, physically or mentally. Methamphetamine dependence is considered a chronic disorder, one with which relapse is common. Many drug counselors say meth users are their most difficult patients to treat. In part, the difficulty is due to the chemical changes to the brain that the drug causes, as well as to the fact that meth is highly addictive. Crystal meth treatment always begins with a period of detoxification, or detox, during which all traces of the drug are removed from the body. Detoxing usually takes place at a controlled facility where drugs are not present. Some detox facilities even use medications to help the addict cope with symptoms of withdrawal. The amount of time detox takes varies with each case.
